A comparative study of nutritional composition and potential use of some underutilized tropical fruits of Arecaceae Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA,RAQUEL B.; SILVA-JÚNIOR,EDVALDO V.; RODRIGUES,LAÍS C.; ANDRADE,LAISE H.C.; SILVA,SUZENE I. DA; HARAND,WOLFGANG; OLIVEIRA,ANTONIO F.M..
In this study, pulp and kernel of fruits from six Arecaceae species were subjected to proximate analysis, fatty acid composition and total carotenoid content analysis. The species with the highest carbohydrate, lipid and protein values were Ptychosperma macarthurii(70.1 g/100 g in the kernel), Syagrus cearensis(40.6 g/100 g in the kernel), andS. coronata(20.6 g/100 g in the pulp). The ash content ranged from 0.61 to 7.51 g/100 g. Lauric, palmitic, and oleic acids were the major fatty acids identified. The total carotenoid contents and retinol activity equivalents were highest in the Pinanga kuhlii (180.3 µg/g) andAcrocomia intumescens (138.0 µg/g) pulp oils. Retinol activity equivalents varied between the investigated species (456 to 1515 μg RAE/100 g)....

Cloning, characterization and expression of Peking duck fatty acid synthase during adipocyte differentiation Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Ding,Fang; Yuan,Xin; Li,Qingqing; Sun,Wenqiang; Gan,Chao; He,Hua; Song,Chenling; Wang,Jiwen.
Background Fatty acid synthase (FAS) is a key enzyme of de novo lipogenesis (DNL), which has been cloned from several species: Gallus gallus, Mus musculus, Homo sapiens, but not from Anas platyrhynchos. The current study was conducted to obtain the full-length coding sequence of Peking duck FAS and investigate its expression during adipocyte differentiation. Results We have isolated a 7654 bp fragment from Peking duck adipocytes that corresponds to the FAS gene. The cloned fragment contains an open reading frame of 7545 bp, encodes a 2515 amino acid protein, and displays high nucleotide and amino acid homology to avian FAS orthologs. Twelve hour treatment of oleic acid significantly up-regulated the expression of FAS in duck preadipocytes (P < 0.05)....

Effect of nitrogen on achene protein, oil, fatty acid profile, and yield of sunflower hybrids Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Ali,Amjed; Ullah,Sami.
Seed yield and achene oil yield are the main determinants for N application rates rather than seed composition. Nitrogen plays a critical role in producing unsaturated fatty acids (oleic and linoleic acids), which are the main factors determining sunflower oil quality (Helianthus annuus L.). Studies were conducted on the effect of N fertilization on seed yield, achene oil yield, and quality parameters of sunflower hybrids for two successive years (2010 and 2011) in a split plot arrangement under a randomized complete block design. The hybrids (Hysun-33 & S-278) and N levels (0, 75, 150, and 225 kg ha-1) were allotted in main and sub-plots, respectively. Increasing N levels resulted in steady increases in yield, protein contents and linoleic acid,...

Effects of oleic acid on the high threshold barium current in seabass Dicentrarchus labrax ventricular myocytes ArchiMer
Chatelier, Aurelien; Imbert, Nathalie; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Mckenzie, David; Bois, P.
The present study employed a patch clamp technique in isolated seabass ventricular myocytes to investigate the hypothesis that oleic acid (OA), a mono-unsaturated fatty acid, can exert direct effects upon whole-cell barium currents. Acute application of free OA caused a dose-dependent depression of the whole-cell barium current that was evoked by a voltage step to 0 mV from a holding potential of -80 mV. The derived 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) was 12.49 +/- 0.27 mu mol l(-1). At a concentration of 30 mu mol l(-1), OA significantly reduced the current density to about 45% of control values, but did not modify either the shape of the current-density voltage relationship or the apparent reversal potential. In addition, OA did not modify the voltage...

Fatty acid composition of the catfish -1: Heterobranchus longifillis (Pisces: clariidae and Chyrsichthys nigrodigitatus (Pisces: Bagridae) reared in tropical fresh waters OceanDocs
Omuaru, V.; Idoniboye-Obu, T.I.E..
The relationship of the fatty acid composition of the three developmental stages (fingerling, juvenile and adult) of Heterobranchus longifilis (Pisces: Clariidae) and Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (Pisces: Bagridae) have been evaluated by gas liquid chromatography (Glc) on polyethylene glycol-2-nitroterephthalic ester (PEGNTE). Results indicated that adults of these fishes, accumulated linolenic acid (C18:3w3) above dietary levels atthe fingerling stage which was remarkably depleted in the adult fishes. Its essentiality in their nutrition and metabolism is thus suggested. In the metabolic tumover,.C18:3w3, is utilized to build up the store of eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5w3), inHeterobranchus longifillis while the store of eicosapentaenoic acis (C20:5w3),...

Measurement of fruit color-heterogeneity index and their relation to Jatropha curcas L., oil in Colombia Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Campuzano-Duque,Luis Fernando; Cardeño,Fernando.
Abstract Jatropha curcas L. is a wild species in the domestication process with an oil and biofuel potential use. The evolutionary-adaptive processes have conferred a reproductive mechanism based on protogyny-geitonogamy, achieving a floral asynchrony addressed to ensure the outcrossing and survival in extreme climate and soil conditions. In the wild, this plant performs a fruit heterogeneity, an unattractive attribute for harvest timing. Therefore, this research aimed to determine the number of harvest, yield and proportion, and physiological states of fruit maturity with the maximum oil quantity and quality. A randomized complete block factorial arrangement of treatments design was performed. The varieties and stages of fruit ripeness, were the factors....

Modification of fatty acid composition in broiler chickens fed canola oil Biol. Res.
Gallardo,María A; Pérez,Druso D; Leighton,Federico M.
This article describes the possibility of modifying the composition of fat tissue in broiler chickens fed canola oil, which is high in monounsaturated fatty acids. 128 one-day old broiler chickens, randomly assigned into 4 groups of 32 chicks each, received one of four diets containing 15% oil with different percentages of canola oil (diet 1: 0% canola oil, diet 2: 5% canola oil, diet 3: 10% canola oil and diet 4: 15% canola oil), for 31 days. Each group was divided into 4 subgroups of 8 chicks. The birds were sacrificed at day 45 to obtain tissue samples. The fatty acid composition was measured in meat (legs and breasts), fat (abdominal and subcutaneous) and plasma. An increase in oleic acid (p<0.01) was detected, as well as a decrease in linoleic acid...

Modulation des performances cardio-respiratoires du bar europeen (Dicentrarchus labrax) par l'apport d'acides gras alimentaires: une etude integree des effets cardiaques in vivo au courant calcique de type L des myocytes ventriculaires ArchiMer
Chatelier, Aurelien.
Diet quality, and particularly fatty acids composition, is an environmental factor that is emerging as a significant source of physiological diversity. Indeed, numerous recent studies show that the fatty acid composition of the diet influences cardiac and metabolic performances of organisms. Because it is involved in the control and regulation of internal flow of matter and energy, the heart is believed to play a central role in environmental adaptation in fish. Within the double context of adaptation of individuals to their ecological niche and species evolution, understanding sources of interindividual variability and particularly fatty acid influences on the cardiorespiratory system is essential. The objective of the study was to investigate in the sea...

Variable positive end-expiratory pressure can maintain oxygenation in experimental acute respiratory distress syndrome induced by oleic acid in dogs BJMBR
Lanza,F.C.; Damasceno,M.C.P.; Leme,F.; Yagui,A.C.Z.; Paiva,K.C.; Luque,A.; Beppu,O.S..
The use of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) or lung recruitment maneuvers (RM) to improve oxygenation in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is used but it may reduce cardiac output (CO). Intermittent PEEP may avoid these complications. Our objective was to determine if variable PEEP compared with constant PEEP is capable of maintaining arterial oxygenation and minimizing hemodynamic alterations with or without RM. Eighteen dogs with ARDS induced by oleic acid were randomized into three equal groups: group 1, low variable PEEP; group 2, high variable PEEP, and group 3, RM + high variable PEEP. All groups were submitted to constant PEEP, followed by variable PEEP (PEEP was increased from 5 to 10 cmH2O in group 1, and from 5 to 18 cmH2O in the...
